<< back to floors
Natural cork products have been enriching interiors for over 100 years. They offer a variety of benefits that no other flooring can match! Cork flooring has improved durability and an ease of maintenance that wasn't available in years past. It is available in an array of beautiful colors and patterns. Its unique cellular structure makes it a cushion underfoot, a great thermal insulator, resilient, impermeable, hypoallergenic, anti-static and fire retardant.

Cork flooring is made from the outer bark of the cork tree, Quercus suber, harvested by hand every 9-10 years over the tree's potential lifespan of 500 years. The properties of cork are derived naturally from the structure and chemical composition of the inner cells. Each cubic inch is made up of 100 million prism shaped cells filled with air.

CORK FLOORING OFFERS A COMBINATION OF BENEFITS NO OTHER FLOOR CAN MATCH:

INSULATION - Because cork is 50% air by volume, it has wonderful thermal and acoustical insulating properties.

RESILIENCY AND ELASTICITY
- Cork provides a comfortable cushion underfoot as it gives under compression. Cork "bounces back" so recovery from marks left by furniture will leave minimal residual indentation ... less noticeable than wood, carpet or vinyl floors.

DURABILITY
- Cork is remarkably resistant to wear, as it is less affected by impact and friction than other hard surfaces.

IMPERMEABILITY
- Cork contains a natural waxy substance rendering it water resistant and airtight.

HYPOALLERGENIC AND ANTIMICROBIAL -
Cork does not absorb dust and consequently does not cause allergies. It contains Suberin, a natural repellent to insects, mold and mildew.

FIRE RETARDANT
- A natural fire retardant, cork does not spread flames and does not release toxic gases during combustion.

INSTALLATION
- Cork can be installed as a "floating floor". The planks snap together providing an easy do-it-yourself install. Or, Underfoot can install the floor for you. Cork can also be purchased in tiles which are glued down. We recommend our professional installation for this process. A well-maintained floor will last for decades. Only sweeping and dust mopping are required. Cork floors can be re-coated with Urethane to rejuvenate the finish if signs of wear occur. This floor is easy on the environment, easy on your feet, easy on your ears, easy on your health and easy on your pocketbook.
